R. Webbe ( Winchester and New) : a dangerous bat , though not successful last season ; plays good cricket , and can hit freely . A. H. Heath (Clifton and Brasenose ) : a pretty bat , and plays in very neat style ; a fast bowler of erratic order ; fair field , played a very good first innings against Oxford . A. D. Greene (Clifton and Exeter ) : a steady bat ; a splendid field ; and a sure catch , but was not so successful as in previous years . E. T. Hirst (Rugby and Balliol ) : a free -hitting bat, and good , though rather casual field . A. H. Evans (Clifton and Oriel ) : a straight , and at times very effective fast round -arm bowler , though rather out of practice last year owing to inability to play in early matches ; bowled with great effect in both matches for Gentlemen v. Players ; a brilliant field , fair bat . J. H. M. Hare (Upping- hamand Exeter ) : a steady bat , with a very peculiar and not taking style ; a fast round-arm bowler ; and good field . H. Fowler (Clifton and N e w) ; a hard hitter , and made some good scores during the year , though unsuccessful in the Inter-University match. A. Haskett - Smith (Eton and University ) : a useful batsman , scoring fast and hitting well all round ; a neat field . F. G. Jellicoe (Haileybury and New) : a good slow left round -arm bowler , and was generally effective , especially in the home matches ; a poor bat. W. A. Thornton , (Winchester and St. John's ) : a useful all -round man, being a straight fast round-armbowler ; at times an effective bat and a good field . N. Maclachlan (Loretto and Keble) : did little with the bat, but did good service with the ball , taking twenty -one wickets for an average of 13.15 ; quick in the field.
