Lyttelton (Eton and Trinity ) : avery dangerous bat , playing in commanding style and getting runs very quickly ; the best amateur wicket -keeper of the day ; was very successful in batting throughout , despite a wet season ,having a fine average of 44 runs for the Uni- versity ; captained the eleven with great judgment throughout . D. Q. Steel (Uppingham and Trinity Hall) : regained a good deal of his former powers ; a grand all round hitter , and merely requires a little more patience to have also a very fine defence ; fielded point for the eleven , and did well in that capacity . L. K. Jarvis (Harrow and Trinity ) : a very fine field , but, probably owing to the wet season , lost all confidence with the bat . A. G. Steel (Marlborough and Trinity Hall): though unable in several matches to play for the eleven was whenthere , as ever , invaluable . A most useful and excellent bat, very rarely failing to score and never to put alacrity into the game. In bowling not quite so successful as last year , though nothing could have surpassed his perform- ance in the second innings of University match, while against professionals throughout the season he was unresisted . Hon. Ivo Bligh (Eton and Trinity ) : played splendidly for his University , as his average shows ; has almost the best ' cut' in England, and has got muchmore patience than in 1878 ; good field and unfailing catch . H. E. Whitfeld (Eton and Trinity ): has an admirable defence shown to great advantage against Oxford ; a very good , safe , and un- tiring field . A. F. J. Ford (Repton and King's ) : a really useful bowler as Middlesex cricket as well as Cambridge testified . A very fine hitter , but does not always select the right ball . P. H. Morton (Rossall and Trinity ) : bowled beautifully throughout the season ; has a break back almost unequalled among fast bowlers , professional or amateur ; in batting not quite so successful as in 1878. H. Wood (Emmanuel) : a good and lucky slow bowler , getting no less than 38 wickets ; a resolute batsman to whomnervousness is unknown. R. S. Jones (Trinity ) : as the Canterbury week proved , is a really finished batsman , with fine defence and hitting for Cambridge , however , he seemed unable to resist the depressing influence of ground and weather . G. B. Studd ( Eton and Trinity ) : only played three innings for Cambridge , but is the best field in the e l e v e n. *??????????????? ??A????????
