THOUGH perhaps not quite so strong all round as in 1878 , the Cambridge eleven were in every way superior to their rivals at Oxford , and the Inter- University proved , as was expected , an easy win for the Light Blues . Gene- rally Public School Cricket was hardly up to the highest standard , but this maybe to a great extent accounted for by the rainy weather , which in many cases almost entirely prevented any chance of practice . T h e r es e e m e dto b e little difference between Harrowand Eton on the form at Lord's , and the Etonians only beat Winchester by 45 runs . Rugby proved too strong for Marlborough , and the latter defeated Cheltenham , who just settled Clifton , Forrest the Cheltenham Captain bowling the tenth Clifton wicket with the last ball of the match . The best Public School bat of the year , beyond all doubt , was C. F. Leslie , the Rugby Captain , a fine and powerful hitter , and in bowling C. T. Studd (slow round ) of Eton , who goes to Cambridge , H. Rotherham (very fast round ) of Uppingham , and H. Hardwick (slow round ) of Marlborough werethe mostsuccessful .
