Considering the number of matches in which the county was engaged , two more indeed than Notts and four more than any other shire , it would have been sur- prising if the Yorkshire eleven had not shown a little inequality at times during a season so unusual as that of 1879. In absolute figures it certainly cannot showsuch a clean bill of health as two of its Northern rivals , but none the less it can lay claim to being the only county that beat Lancashire and Notts ; and its doubledefeat of Middlesexmorethancounterbalanced the tworeverses it suffered at the hands of Derbyshire . Strangely enough , with the exception of its defeat by Derbyshire , not one of the seven homematches resulted unfavour- ably for Yorkshire ; and while two of the four lost were by such small majorities as 7 and 27 runs , five of its six homevictories were decisive . It is something to have defeated in turn Middlesex , Surrey , Kent, Notts , Gloucestershire , and Lanca- shire , every county indeed but its neighbour of Derby . Altogether the York- shiremen did not in some cases play upto their reputation , but with batsmenlike Ulyett, Bates , Lockwood, and Hall, and such bowlers as Bates , Peate, Emmett, Hill , Mr. H. Woodand Ulyett , there is at least the material for a county eleven . R e s u l t so fM a t c h e s . Matches Played , 14 ; Won, 7 ; Drawn, 3 ; Lost, 4.
