[For Southerton's Benefit .] Whatought to have been a very substantial reward for a most deserving player , was, thanks to a combination of circumstances , only a qualified suc- cess. T h ematchbetweenM.C.C.andGroundandK e n trobbedthe South of more than one good bat, and as those usually reliable batsmen who did play were out of luck , the game did not last anything like so long as could have been wished . Mainly through the effective bowling of Midwinter , the Northerners were well got rid of for 134 , but even then they had 57 runs in hand, and not one of the Southerners , except Mr. W. G. Grace, whocontributed 21 and 41 , seemed able to do anything with the bowling of Bates . The game was over in two days , and though a match was improvised for the Saturday afternoon , the weather was so dull and threatening that the funds derived little benefit from the addition . TheNorth wonby nine wickets . North, 134 and 46 (one wicket ) ; total , 180. South, 77 and 101 ; total , 178 . But for the one, and that by no means a decisive , defeat of Kent at Town Malling , Sussex would have had to be content with a summary altogether barren of victories . Surrey and Kent were the only first -class counties with whom apparently the Sussex executive deemed it advisable to permit their eleven to try conclusions in 1879, but the substitution of Hertfordshire and Leicestershire for Gloucestershire and Yorkshire did not improve their budget , and, all told , the season showed 1 win, 1 drawn game, and 6 defeats . During the early part of the season the county was certainly not so well represented as it might have been ; but both batting and bowling certainly need a very marked improvement , and it is an unpleasant duty to those who remember the proud position Sussex once occupied to find it unmistakably at the bottom of the county tree in 1879. ton fro 48) guderetauniel from (t) oxfalcoitoll Z
