James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880

9 0 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. (2) Gentlemenv. Players. July 3, 4, 5, 1879. Thetoss , it maysafely be remarked, had muchto dowith the result of this , the twenty -third match between Gentlemen and Players on the Surrey Ground . Bothsides were strong , but the Amateursin going in first had all the best of the wicket , and there was indeed small chance for the Players when their turn came to bat , with the ground fast recovering from the heavy rains which hadprevented any play on the first day. Mr. A. G. Steel's 46 not-out was the best innings on the side of the Amateurs, and, as nine of them got into double figures , the result was a long total of 263-more than long enough for the Players on a very difficult wicket. Indeed Messrs . A. G. Steel and Evans bowled throughout both innings without a change , a feat never previously recorded by Amateurs in this match at the Oval ; and the Gentlemen won easily byan innings and 35 runs . The victory was the more noteworthy in that they for once were able to do well without any great assistance from Mr. W. G. Grace, whowas not called upon to bowl a ball . The Players , be it added , havenot w o nsince 1865. : G E N T L E M E N . W .G. Grace(Gloucestershire ) b S h a w 26 A. P. Lucas(Surrey) b E m m e t t 1 4 G.F.Vernon(Middlesex) b Lockwood34 E. F. S.
