Alcock , Surrey Ground , Kennington Oval , London , S.E. Though fairly successful towards the close of the season , there was on the wholelittle to encourage a hope of any immediate revival of the old glories of thecounty. All the first four matches played were lost , but afterwards the aspect of affairs improved , and of the six last engagements none resulted in an absolute defeat . The absence of Mr. W. H. Gamethroughout , the rare appear- ances of Mr. Lucas, and the ill -success of Barratt's bowling , all tended to weakenan eleven not always to be relied upon, and the loss of Mr. Strachan during the later matches , owing to an injured finger , was another serious blow. Blamires proved himself a decided acquisition in the bowling line , but Board- m a n, the only young professional of any promise whohas come to the front for some time , failed to come up to his Mayform , and the Colts apparently produced no youngsters good enough to be drafted into the county eleven .
