James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880
O KTHE COUNTIESIN 1 8 7 9 . 1 8 5 N O T T I N G H A M S H I R . OFFICERS FOR 1879.-President , Duke of St. Albans . Vice-President , W. H. Coates . Committee , Major Becher , G. Fillingham , L. Franklin , A. Т. Ashwell , A. Hoyles , C. J. Elliott , R. H. Steegmann , D. Gorse , C. Oscroft , W. Wright , T. Brittle . Hon . Sec . and Treasurer , Captain Holden , Bramcote , Nottinghamshire . Assistant Secretary , E. Browne , Low Pave- ment, Nottingham. That Nottinghamshire was second to no other county in 1879 is to be proved bythe figures , and indeed it is open to question whether on paper Nottingham shire had not a little the best of Lancashire , its greatest rival of the year . As with Lancashire , Yorkshire was the only shire able to boast avictory over Nottinghamshire ; and it is to be remarked that the eleven played two more matches than any team , only excepting that of Yorkshire . Out of twelve en- gagements, five were won, and among these was a success hitherto unrecorded- avictory over Gloucestershire on its own ground . Morley's bowling for the county was exceptionally fine ; Oscroft's batting reminded one of the vigour of his youthful play ; Shaw was very destructive , if at times not quite so deadly as of old ; andBarnes and Flowers showed themselves to be two of the very bestall- round players of the year .
