Nottinghamshire. Nottingham , August 11 , 12, 13, 1879 . 1 Underbetter conditions the Middlesex batting cameout in bold relief after the ill success that had attended it at the end of the previous week at Hudders- field . Somevigorous hitting by Scotton and Barnes converted what seemed likely at first to be a smallish score into a large total of 248, the former carry- ing out his bat for 84. Contrary to all expectation , Middlesex had to follow on in a minority of 122 runs ; but in the second attempt they fully atoned for this shortcoming with a splendid show of 318 for six wickets , and at the end of the match Middlesex had certainly not the worst of the outlook . Mr. C. I. Thornton produced a sensation by scoring 72 out of 89 runs in fifty -five minutes , and the Hon. A. Lyttelton , who got into three figures in the same contest in 1877, was again highest scorer with 102. The match was drawn. Middlesex , 126 and 318 (six wickets ) ; total , 444.
