Why this match is always played so early in the seaso11 it is dilficnlt to tell Amateurs are not, as a rule, partial to May cricket, and thougli the Clul) has many of the has} professionals of tlle day on its stafl of grouiid bowlers, fur batting it is dependent chiefly 011 its amateurs. Englmid was fairly re resented, but the only two really dangerous batsmeii 011 the side of the M. .C. were Messrs. “I. G. Grace and Hadow. Almost continuous rain eansetl the scoring to be very low, and it was a bowlers’ match throughout. Mr. W. G. The Marylebqne team on this occasion was anythiiig but a credit to the Club and especially 111 batting, was utterly unwortliy of such an eleven as that of, Cambridge. Mr. A. G. steel was emphatically the hero of the match, as he played a very creditable innings of forty—two, not out, against the bowling of Shaw and Marley, and besides tuuk ten of the Marylebonc wickets. Sixteen was the highest score 011 the Side of the M.C.C., and it could hardly have becii a
