James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1878

83 not high on either side, and the bowlers had the best of it throughout. Mr. Akroyd, with 48 and 14, was the chief contributor for Surrey, and Barratt second on the list with 18 and 30* -b **6 Yorkshiremen as usual were hardly at home with the slow bowling, and Emmett, who played really good cricket each time for 47 and 24, and H. Lockwood (23 and 15) alone offered any resis tance each time. Oddly the match was a tie on the first innings, as each eleven got 137, but the Yorkshiremen made a poor show at the finish, and were all dismissed for 85. Surrey won by 76 runs. Rain at the finish saved Surrey from a probable defeat and robbed Sussex of its one chance of a victory in 1877. Sussex was lucky in winning the toss, and on a splendid wicket scored 230, with the Captain (the Rev. F . J. Green field) occupying the first place, with a well hit innings of 95. Rain prevented more than an hour-and-a-half s play on the second day, and on the third morning Surrey had to follow on with a wicket in very bad order, exactly a hundred runs to the bad. Lillywhite’s bowling puzzled them altogether, but when f©»v <cf the best wickets had fallen for 45 a fearful storm with thunder and lightning swamped the ground, and further play was out of the question, so that the match had to be drawn altogether in favour of Sussex. Surrey, 130 and 45 (4 wickets); total, 175. Sussex, 230. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets. Lillywhite (Sussex).............. 76.1 39 58 8 ( 3 ) Surrey v, Sussex. Brighton, Aug. 13, 14, and 15. Surrey had a strong batting eleven, though Mr. Lucas was absent, but in bowling it was weak, as Southerton was not chosen as one of the team, and Barratt, Jones, and Mr. Strachan were the only bowlers on the side. Mr. Game played as good an innings as he has ever done for 75, and respectable scores of 46, 45, and 34, by Messrs. Read, Carmichael, and Akroyd, respec tively, raised the Surrey total to 260. Sussex made a miserable show with the bat, as the first innings only amounted to 40, and in the second Mr. J. M. Maie ( 4 1) and Charlwood (48) were the only ones to make any stand. Surrey won by an innings and 92 runs. Surrey, 260. Sussex, 40 and 128 ; total, 168. Overs, Maidens. Runs. Wickets. Barratt (Surrey) ...................... 51 22 86 9 Mr. Strachan (2nd inns.
