James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1878

81 ( 4 ) Notts, v. Yorkshire. Sheffield, September 3, 4, 5. Rain completely spoiled this, the last important match of the season. Notts went in first in a very bad light, and it was only a stand made by Barnes (28 not out), and Martin McIntyre (25), when seven wickets were down for 59 that enabled Notts to reach n o . A t the end of the first day, Yorkshire had scored 111 with only three wickets down, but the last five batsmen only added 14 runs, and hence Yorkshire after all had to be content with an advan tage of 35 runs on the first innings. With the exception of Daft, whose 53 was a very useful and well-played score, none of the Nottingham men could play the slow bowling of Armitage and Lockwood. Yorkshire had only 45 minutes in which to obtain 90 runs to win, but the good hitting of Ulyett who was not out with 33, assisted them in getting 49 of the number with the loss of only one bad wicket. The match was drawn, Notts, n o and 143; total, 253. Yorkshire, 145 and 49 (1 wicket); total, 204. Overs. Maidens, Runs. Wickets.
