James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1878
80 (1) Notts v, Yorkshire. Nottingham, June 25, 26, and 27. Played on the same days as the Oxford and Cambridge match in London, but productive of a closer and more exciting contest. Owing to an injury W ild was unable to assist Notts, and the eleven contained more than one new hand. Shrewsbury was in two hours and a quarter for 62 of a first total of 168 by Notts, and Blackburn was the highest scorer for Yorkshire with 28 out of 140. A tremendous storm on Tuesday altered the complexion of affairs for the worse. Seven batsmen in the second venture of Notts together were credited with 20 runs, and a fine score of 41 by Oscroft alone redeemed the innings from insignificance. Yorkshire at the close wanted 144 to win, but they reduced their chances considerably at the outset by the rashness of their two first batsmen, who were both run out, and despite the stand by E. Lockwood, 31 not out, and Armitage 30, Notts won a good match by 22 runs.. Notts 168 and 115, total 283. Yorkshire 140 and 121, total 261. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets- Emmett (Yorkshire),,., 58*.3 28 72 9 (2) Notts v. Surrey. Nottingham, July 12, 13, 14. Another good match, resulting in even a closer struggle than that las*- recorded. The scoring was never high on either side, as the largest innings was 150 by Notts, and the best individual contribution 48 by W ild in the first venture of Notts. Morley chiefly assisted to get Surrey out in their first innings for a small total of 103, and the very effective slow round bowling of Mr. Strachan at the close secured the dismissal of Notts in their second effort for 120. Surrey had 168 to win, and seven wickets were down for 92. Mr. Carmichael played really sound cricket for 47, and Mr. Chandler (35), and Mr. Pooley (21) by free hitting made the game most exciting, though Notts had a little in hand and won by only eighteen runs. Notts 150 and 120. Total 270. Surrey 103 and 149. Total 252. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets, Morley (1st Inns Surrey) ..................40.3 28 32 5 Mr. Strachan (2nd Inns Notts) ...... 15.1 9 10 5 ( 3 ) Notts v. Surrey. Oval, July 19, 20, 21. Surrey had a stronger team than in the previous match, though they decided to play without Southerton’s bowling, and this time managed to turn the tables. Surrey went in first on a splendid wicket, and were out for 250, Mr. A . P. Lueas, who started the batting with Mr. Game, falling the sixth wicket down at 226, after a faultless score of 115. Notts had to retire for only a poor show of 97 against Barratt, Jones, and Mr. Lucas, but in their second innings they made full amends with six double figures, and a large total of 24 7 > to which Wild, whose 64 was not an evenly plaved score, Shrewsbury (47), and Daft (44) were the chief contributors. Surrey had only 95 runs to win, but Daft’s lobs were not so easy to play as was expected, and a steadily played 20, not out, by Mr. L . A . Shuter at the close, enabled Surrey to win with three wickets in hand. Surrey, 250 and 97 (7 wickets) ; total, 347. Notts, 97 and 247 ; total, 344. Runs, Wickets. 66 8 Overs. Mr. Lucas (Surrey)................ ......... 56 Maidens. 28
