James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1878
78 (3) Middlesex v. [Notts. Nottingham, Aug . 16, I 7 > 18. Rain and the expiry of time robbed Middlesex of a brilliant victory, one that would have compensated the eleven in some slight measure for previous ill- success. Mr. I. D. Walker won the toss, and Middlesex made the largest total of the county year (400). The first wicket (Mr. I. D. Walker’s) fell for 80, the second (Mr. A . J. Webbe ’s) for 206, the third (Mr. H. R . W ebbe ’s) for 275, the fourth (Hon. A . Lyttleton’s) for 325 Hon. A . Lyttleton and Mr. A . J. Webbe each scored 100. The Nottingham fielding was very loose, and several catches were missed. Extras amounted to 35, including 19 byes and 14 leg byes, and one over of Selby’s produced as many as thirteen runs. Nor was the Nottingham batting generally a great improvement on their bowling and fielding. Mr. A . W . Cursham hit freely for 67 and 13, and Selby 59 and 25, and W ild 1 and 74, played good cricket, but otherwise the exhibition was not brilliant. When things were going all in favour of Middlesex, and victory was sure, rain unfortunately stopped play for half an hour, and so time expired with only Sherwin, a very moderate batsman, to go in, and ten runs still wanted to prevent the defeat of Notts in an innings.
