Lancashire shows a summary of ten matches, of which six were wins and four defeats. Its double defeat by Kent was more than counterbalanced by its two victories over Yorkshire, and, indeed, the best eleven of Lancashire, if it could be collected, would be as strong as that of any county team, only excepting that of Gloucestershire. Mr. Appleby’s aid, on the few occasions on which he did play, was most effective, and both in batting and bowling his figures were creditable. With Wm. McIntyre, Watson, and Messrs. Appleby and Patterson to bowl, Messrs. Hornby, Royle, the two Steel’s, Patterson, Appleby, Patterson, and Barlow to bat, Pilling at the wicket, and a brilliant fielding side, Lancashire can muster an eleven very strong at all points of the game.
