I he progress of Rentish cricket, under Lord Harris’s management, was even more marked during the past season than in 1876. Of a very lengthy pro gramme of twelve matches, seven werewon, in most cases decisively, and four lost, onebythreewrckets, anotherbyonlyonewicket. ThebattingofMr. FrankPenn, and the bowling of George Hearne, were the principal agents in the successes of Rent, and with another good bowler the eleven would be a very formidable opposition. (1) Kent v. Notts. Canterbury, June 14, 15, and 16. Rent was singularly unfortunate in playing against the bowling of Alfred Shaw, in one of the two matches in which he was able to play during the season of 1877. Owing to severe storms during the early part of the week, the wicket at the outset played badly, and, though Rent had a strong batting eleven, the scoring was not high on either side in the first innings, as Notts with 157 had 63 in hand. In the second innings the Nottingham batsmen completely collared the Rentish bowling, and eight double figures
