GLOUCESTERSHIRE. O fficers for 1877 .—President, Duke of Beaufort, K.G. , Lord Fitzhardinge. Treasurer , W. H. Harford. Captain , W. G. Graces Secretary , E. M. Grace. Committee , J. W . Arrowsmith, J. C. Bengough, J. A . Bush, S. H. Brookes, Rev. C. R. Davy, Sir Wm. V. Guiso, Bart., Henry Grace, William Henry Miles, A. A . Bathurst, M.P., R . Fenton Miles, T. G. Matthews, Rev. C. H. Ridding, F. Townsend, Rev. T. A. Southwood, J. F. Norris, J. A . Ware, Capt. T. S. Warren, A . P. Wctherman. Gloucestershire was indisputably the champion county of 1877. Out of eight matches, seven were won in eveiy case with a large majority, while the victory over England at the Oval, though the English eleven was in no way representa tive, was a creditable performance. For years no shire has had such a fine all round eleven as has now the county of Gloucester. Mr. W. G. Grace’s effective bowling, a batting eleven without any tail, and an exceptionally brilliant fielding side, has placed Gloucestershire without a rival among the counties. Results of Matches. For 9 wckts (1) Gloucesterslrire v- Surrey. Oval, June 7 and 8. Neither side was fully represented, and as Jupp and Southerton had just returned from Australia, they were altogether out of form. Surrey made a very poor show at the start on an excellent wicket, as Mr. Game (53) and Barratt (23) were the only double figures, and the Amateur’s score showed just one half of the runs from the bat. In the second innings he was even more successful, as he carried out his bat for a very fine innings of 81, and with Messrs. Wyatt (29) and Strachan (14) made 124 out of 148 runs from the bat, so that eight of the eleven contributed only 24. The feature of the Gloucester shire batting was that Mr. J. A. Bush was the highest run-getter with 53. Gloucestershire won by nine wickets. Gloucestershire, 226 and 45 (one wicket); total, 271. Surrey, n o and 160; total, 270. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets.
