James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1878

62 Derbyshire v. Yorkshire. Derby, August 20, 21, and 22. Again bad weather interfered with the game, but still some good scoring was done by each side. Ulyett and H. Lockwood put on 51 runs for the first wicket of Yorkshire, and the very fine batting of Greenwood (75) and Eastwood (57), enabled the eleven to start with an excellent score of 278. Clayton and Emmett rattled down the Derbyshire team in 5* overs for only 74 runs, but timely rain on the third morning followed by some severe hitting by Platts (90 not out) and Hickton (63), robbed Yorkshire of a certain triumph. The second innings of Derbyshire closed just ten minutes before time, so that the Yorkshiremen were unable to go in to get the 17 runs that would have given them the victory. Yorkshire, 2 78.
