58 of the season, and considering that lie was in foi five houis and a quarter, that he never gave a semblance ot a chance on the Inst day, while lie had scored 252 notout, the score is worthy of reproduction. A match between Notts and Lancashire engaged several Players who should have taken part in this contest, and the removal of the support previously given by the leading Amateurs, robbed the Gentlemen of several influential representatives, sb that neither side had anything like its strength. That such was the case is a matter for regret as a better wicket has never been provided anywhere, as the Players found to their cost. The Gentlemen scored 400 with Mr. W . G. Grace (134), Read (72), and Buckland (50), as the pi'incipal con tributors. A severe thunderstorm with lightning and hail on the second morning completely ruined the chances of the Player's although Ulyett managed to make two excellent scores of 53 and 118, the latter a very7fine though lucky display of clean well hitting. The Gentlemen won by 9 wickets. Gentlemen 400 and 16 (1 wicket); total, 416. Players 181 and 234 ; total, 415. . Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets. F . M.
