It was not much of a benefit, thanks, on the one hand, to cold and rainy weather, on the other, to circumstances which prevented either side being at all representative. A match between Lancashire and Derbyshire, in conjunc tion with the absence of the Australian team, left the North with forces greatly reduced, while the southern eleven might have been considerably strengthened. Mr. W . G. Grace’s score of 261 was the greatest achievement
