James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1878

u of the University team, the cricket all round was of a very superior kind. Mr. A . T. Webfce. the Oxford Captain opened the Oxford batting with a well- plaved -o. and with his brother achieved a feat in scoring 102 runs for the lirsi wicket in the second innings. Xone of the Marylebone batsmen could reach 50 in either attempt, and eventually the University won a good match bv runs. Oxford, 178 and 161; total, 339 * M .C.C., 176 and 113; total, 2S9. Overs. Runs, Maidens, Wickets, H. G.Tylecote (Second Innings M.C.C.) 24-2 10 39 6 (10) M.C.C. and Ground v. Kent. Canterbury, 9 and 10, (12 a side.) Remembering the long score made by Kent in 1876 when the Club had not the aid of the ground, M.C.C. enlisted the services of Morley and Rylott. The scoring was singularly low after the recollection of the same match the pre vious year, when Mr. W . G. Grace scored 344. Kent made a bad show with the bat as their Captain Lord Harris ‘ bagged a brace,’ Mr. Frank Penn only reached thirty, Mr. Yardley half that number in two innings, and Mr. Absolom was the highest scorer with 25 and 17. Mr. W . G. Grace was caught at point for a single, and as he was the only batsman of the slightest pretensions in the team, things looked gloomy, for the Club. Eight wickets were down for 90, but Messrs. W . H. Hay and E. Bray fortunately put on 58 runs for the ninth wicket, and M.C.C. had one run in hand at the end of an innings. The second time Mr. W . G . Grace was in form, and the 74 runs wanted to win were got well within the hour with the loss of a wicket. M.C.C. and Ground won by ten wickets. M.C.C. 178 and 74 (for one wicket); total, 252. Kent, 177 and 74; total, 251. Mr. W . G. Grace’s bowling in the second innings of Kent was remarkable. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets. 3*1 35 19 6 (11) M.C.C. and Ground v. Yorkshire. Scarborough, Aug. 30, 31, and Sept. 1. Continuous rain during the three first days of the week, and execrable weather throughout the game, robbed this closing match of all its interest. The bowlers had it all their own way, and the batting wras singular throughout. The first three innings in all only realised 148 runs, and the Marylebone eleven, in which w’ere Messrs. I. D. Walker, A . J. Webbe, W . H. Hadow, T. S. Pearson, and Wild, in their opening venture were all dismissed for 31 without one double figure. Yorkshire in their second innings wrere all out for 46, and finally, after losing three wickets, in the achievement of 88 runs, M.C.C. won by seven wickets. M.C.C. and Ground, 31 and 88 (for three wickets); total 119. Yorkshire, 71 and 46 ; total, 117. Overs. Emmett (First Innings M .C .C .). . . . 12.1 Maidens.
