James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1878
43 were out of the question. Mr. W . G. Grace was missed at point the very first b ul of the match, and his escape was unfortunate for Derbyshire as his 35 and yd were the only figures of any account on the Marylebone side. His bow ling too so completely puzzled the Derbyshire batsmen that Mr. J. Smith ' 15 and 22) was the highest scorer, and M.C.C. won by 40 runs. The cricket all round of the County eleven was below their usual standard, as the fielding was loose and the bowling, only excepting that of Mycroft and of Hind who in the second innings of the Club took four wickets at a cost of nine runs, harm less. Mycroft in the first innings of M.C.C. at one time clean bowled four wickets in six balls without a run, and in all his analysis compared thus with that of Mr. W . G. Grace. Overs. Maidens. Runs. The County on the other hand had not anything like its best team, and as neither Messrs. Hornby nor Barlow, usually the safest batsmen on the side, came off in either innings, the scoring was only low, Messrs. F. Taylor, 29 and 26, and Chadwick, 23 and 19, being the highest contributors. The chief figures of the Marylebone batting were a very fine first innings of 101 out of 180, by the Hon. A . Lyttelton, and some good cricket by Messrs. H. R . Webbe and I. D. Walker, who put on 71 runs for the first wicket in the second venture. M.C.C. won by 144 runs. M.C.C. 180 and 203 ; total, 383. Lancashire, 11 o and 129; total, 239. A splendid wicket and glorious weather gave every promise of high scoring which was fullysustained. Mr. W . G. Grace was not in the ranks ofMarylebone, nor was Mycroft, so that the Club was not represented by its best eleven, though it was strong enough as events proved. The Cambridge Eleven made a bad show in the first innings, against the bowling of Morley, Rylott, and Clayton, as Messrs. Lucas (50), and H. Pigg (34) made 84 out of total of 130, though they made amends in the second attempt in which were eight double figures with a very fine score of 95 by Mr. Lucas at the head. Cambridge seemed to have the game well in hand, when Marylebone went in -with 256 to win, but their bowling soon went utterly to pieces, and the number required was secured with the loss of only four wickets, Wild carrying out his bat for a well played 104. M.C.C. won by six wickets. M.C.C. 178 and 256 (four wickets); total, 434. Cambridge, 130 and 303 ; total, 433. ( 9 ) M.C.C. and Ground v .Oxford University. Lord’s, June 21 and 22. This match proved a singular contrast to that with Cambridge on the first three days of the week. The Marylebone team was of about the same calibre as in the previous match and though the scoring was not so high on the part ft
