James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1878

42 68, runs for three wickets. Tuesday’s play was altogether sensational, twenty-seven wickets in all only added 94 runs, and the match was over at ten minutes to live o’clock, the second innings of Marylebone amounting to without a double figqrc, that of England to 26, to whic 1 Mr. Gilbert con tributed 10. The state of the ground helped Watson’s slow round arm bowl ing for England, and his figures were very remarkable. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Out of three days allotted for this match, play was only possible on the second, owing to rain, and little more than an innings to each side took place. Hence few remarks are necessary. Captain Kenyon-Slaney’s 16 was the only double figure in the Marylebone first innings, and Mr. L. Bury, of the Eton Eleven of 1876, was the highest scorer for the University with 21. Messrs. W. G. Grace and Hornby hit well on commencing the second attempt of the Club, and when the game had to be abandoned M.C.C. was four runs on. M.C.C. 60 and 42 (no wickets); total, 102. Cambridge, 98. Mr. Luddington’s bowl ing in the first innings of M.C.C. deserves notice. His five wickets included that of Mr. W . G. Grace, clean bowled. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets, H. T. It was perhaps the worst wicket seen even on the Oxford ground, a spot not famed for the excellence of its wickets. Oxford lost the services of Messrs. Heath and Buckland, and its Captain Mr. A . J. "VVebbe was in the schools, so that the collapse of his team deprived him of a first innings. The Oxonians won the toss and with their Captain an absentee, were all dismissed in an hour and a quarter for twelve runs, of which Mr. Wallington claimed 7 not out. The first three wickets of M.C.C. produced 93 runs, but the total only reached 124, thanks to the effec tive bowling of Mr. H. G. Tylecote who took eight wickets for 51 runs. Ox ford with a complete eleven had 112 to save the innings, but Morley’s bowiing was as unplayable as in the morning, and the second effort of the University stayed at 35. The match begun at 12-35, was finished at 6-30 p.m., and Marylebone with a score of 124 w'on by an innings, and 77 runs. Morley’s bowling for the Club, will certainly rank as one of the curiosities of the year. ~ , T . Overs, Maidens. Runs. Wickets.
