James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1878

MIDDLESEX. B ird . G. An uncertain batsman in first-class matches, though he plays fine cricket in other engagements. A dangerous bat when set, and a geo I field ; very fair wicket-keeper. BULLER, C. F. (Harrow.) Drives very hard and plays the game thoroughly ; not a safe or smart field. Hardly as successful with the willow as in form ;r years, and played little for the County. G reen , C. E. (Uppingham and Cambridge.) One of the best amateur bn; - men of the day, having fine defence with great certainty of hitting all round ; a good long-stop. OTTAWAY, C. J. (Eton and Oxford.) Did not play at all in first-class matches; is a fine bat, with marvellous defence and unwearied patience • a good field. R u t t e r , E. (Rugby.) A slow left-hand round-arm bowler, and has done the County great service ; is a good field, and better bat than his scores imply. Did not play for the County in 1877- T urner , M. (Cheltenham.) A very good wicket-keeper, and at times bats to some account, having rapidly improved the last few years. W alker , I. D. (Harrow.) One of the very best all-round cricketers, being a fine batsman, with a talent for hitting on the off-side, and a truly irre proachable field, especially at mid-off. A good captain and excellent judge of the game. W alker , R.. D. (Harrow and Oxford.) Has not figured so much in pro minent matches of late ; a very clever slow round-arm bowler, and a run- getting bat in his own style. W alker , V . E. (Harrow.) The best judge of the game extant ; as a captain has no equal, and is still a brilliant field in any position, and a most effective batsman ; plays rarely now in first-class matches.. F rancis , C. K. (Rugby and Oxford). At times a very successful fast round- arm bowler, but has lost somewhat of his spin ; plays for Middlesex by residence. . H adow , W. H. (Harrow and Oxford). A medium-pace bowler with high delivery hard hitter. Bowled veiy well and successfully for his county. L ucas , A. C. (Harrow). Bats in good style, and plays the best cricket. S tratford A. H. Still the hardest hitter in England, but not so certain as formerly, is apt to be lazy in the field; plays for Middlesex by residence. Hon. A. L yttelton (Cambridge), F. M. B uckland , A. J.
