A fine bat, with good defence and hitting powers; a good field, especially at long leg and mid o f f ; a very fair wicket-keeper. KENT. Ansoi.OM, C. A. (Cambridge). A splendid field and sure catch ; a slow round-arm bowler, and very useful, as he knows how to use his head. H arris , Lord (Eton and Oxford). A fine bat, played splendid cricket throughout the season, and proved himself one of the best amateur batsmen of the day. A good field ; is an enthusiastic cricketer. MACKINNON, F. A . (Hairow and Cambridge). A verv useful man to the County, being a steady and safe bat and a quick field. PENN, W. (Harrow). A fine bat, playing not only freely and well, but also in good style; can bowl if required. Did not play in first-class matches in 1877. P enn , F. Proved himself to be one of the very best amateur batsmen of the day, having plenty of defence and very great hitting power ; good field ; scored largely throughout the season. PENN, A. A good slow left-hand round-arm bowler, but only played early in the season for the County. F oord -K elcey , W . (Eton and Oxford). A very dangerous bowler on a queer wicket, very much improved as a bat, and played some good innings for his County. Y ardley , W. (Rugby and Cambridge). Showed himself to be as brilliant a batsman as ever, playing some fine innings, especially at the Oval and Canterbury. L eney , H. (Oxford). Played early in the season ; useful all-round, run getting bat, and at times effective as a bowler. M arsham , G. Kept wicket for the County late in the season, and was effective as a b a t ; hits hard. S tokes , L. At times very effective as a “ lob ” bowler, bats in good form, and likely to improve ; fine field. B ligh , Hon. Ivo (Eton). Bids fair to be of use to the County ; bats well, and is a good field, especially at long-stop. J ones , R. S. (Cambridge). A steady, painstaking b a t ; good field. LANCASHIRE. A ppleby ', A . An excellent left fast round-arm bowler, very straight, and worthy a place in any eleven ; also a much improved bat, and very safe catch. H illkirk , J. At times a dangerous batsman, seldom stays at the wicket without scoring ; excels chiefly in hitting, especially on the off side ; did not play much for his County last season. H ornby , A. N. (Harrow). A batsman with very few superiors ; plays the best cricket, with fine defence and great power of hitting; is a splendid field and sure catch, and can bowl with either arm. Has been for several years the highest average scorer for his County; played in most ol the County matches in 1877. Played for Gentlemen.
