Steel (captain), has made a splendid captain, having effected a complete reform in the school cricket; as a player almost perfect alike in batting, bowling and fielding. *C. P. Wilson, has batted soundly and steadily throughout the whole season ; his style though a little stiff is very run-getting; fell off a little in his bowling, perhaps owing to the dead ground; very safe field. *C. E . Grainger, has by careful practice made himself into a very good b a t ; has a finished style with good forward play, and able to punish loose bowling; fair field. *F. M. Lucas, a fine free left-handed batsman, has played some excellent innings during the season, but has generally fallen a victim to his over anxiety for hitting; good change bowler (medium); good field. J . R . Napier, a dangerous batsman when well set, but rather shaky at first; good fast bowler, but ought to attend a little more to pitch; dashing field; captain for 1878. A . S. Oakley, a very promising young batsman, with faultless style ; was much handicapped through illness; good long stop. *G. H. Alston, by constant practice has become a first-rate wicket-keeper, averaging three or four wickets per innings ; poor bat. S. II. Hayes, has played some steady useful innings, but as a rule lost his wicket through his inability to play forward, should rectify this; fair change bowler and good field. S. II. Leach, plays fast bowling with great
