Meek (captain), a good all round'man as a bat, has tremendous hitting powers, and has played several brilliant in nings this season; a useful, and, at times, a very dangerous fast right-hand bowler; an excellent field at mid off; his energy as captain this season is beyond all praise. *A. B. Giles , goes in first, steady bat, wi making runs well behind the wicket ; has played some excellent innings tl i- year, notably v. M.C.C ; very quick in field at cover point and long l fair fast bowler, though inclined to be too short. C. J . E. batted exceedingly well at beginning and end of term, but owing tounlucky accident, had hardly fair chance in middle ; safe field anywhere, and on his day is not to be denied with the ball; captain for 1878. *Lord Ernest Hamilton, fmt bat, with great hitting powers, and good defence whenwell in, tnough rather shaky at first; makes runs very fast; good field in the country, and throws inwell. * W.II . Patterson, awonderfully steadybat, with first class defe and apparently untiring patience; in spite of being handicapped the whole season by an injured hand, has proved himself a brilliant field at cover point
