Hhitfeld (captain), a very g bat, with wonderful patience, as his average shows; his defence is extremely good, but he too often imperils his wicket by putting his left leg in front; a •capital field; average, 42.7. *Hon. IvJSligh, play effective style, making runs very rapidly in all parts’ of the field ; his cutting is the best feature of his play; a first-rate longstop, with neat return ; average, 34.3. *y. E. K . Studd, at the end of the season fully made up for his ill- luck at the commencement, which ill-luck was often the result of his trying to do too much with the ball before he was well set; plays remarkably hard forward, his drives being especially fine ; a useful change bowler, with a high action (fast); Invaluable field at cover point; average, 23.3. * 1 1 . C. Good- Jiart, fallen off considerably in batting since last year ; a good field at long- leg ; average, 12. *G. H. Portal, a very pretty bat, much improved; treats loose bowling with merciless severity, hitting clean and hard; with a little better defence would make a dangerous batsman; a very effective bowler (left-round) with a nasty curl; average, 17.8.6'. M. Smith (Captain for 1878), very straight, slow bowler (round) with a break in from the off, making it dangerous to cut; did not bowl so steadily as he did last year; as a bat has improved; makes runs on occasions; average, 11.8. G. B. Studd, a very fine defensive batsman, but is hardly strong enough to make runs quickly; an exceedingly good field anywhere ; average, 26. C. T. Studd, like his brothers plays in a very perfect style, but is rather apt to move his right foot, and so weakens his play; bowls slows with considerable success; average, 12.5. A. y. Chitty ,very fair wicket-keeper ; has a peculiarly hard hit on off-side, but his defence is weak; average, 5.4. *A. B. Ridley, a useful change bowler at times ; has a good idea of hitting, chiefly on the on side, average, 10; *L. TV. Matthews, left-hand bowler (medium round), with a difficult break back; has the square leg hit common to left-hand batsmen, but he sometimes applies it to straightballs, average, 7.
