Nicholson , improved greatly as a bat during the season ; can punish loose bowling, and is a safe and clean leg-hit ter, but does not keep his bat straight enough for good defence ; good long-leg and throws well. . 7 . Stokes , a promising bat with good straight style, somewhat weak at present, but with more strength should make a useful man. A. S. Jackson, a steady bat with fair defence, wanting in power; can keep wicket a little. A. y. E. Newton , at times a difficult bowler, fast right hand with high delivery'; very uncertain in pitch, and consequently expensive ; can hit hard but has no defence, and docs not play with a straight bat. //.
