James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1878
110 * has a strong 'defence; can longstop very well when he likes. 'J\ J . Hall owing to an accident to his hand has played but little with the eleven ; showed some form before the season began ; a bad field. H . M . K ilby , proved a very useful bowler, with an easy delivery and considerable spin, but his bowling was rather short at times ; batted at times with freedom, and in really good form. A JJ. Koe, a collected but rather uncertain b a t ; his bowling was fairly straight, but p la in ; his cricket wanted energy. W. Marshall, batted far better than last year ; has a good defence, strong wrist play, and hits well, especially to the o f f ; his bowling is at times destructive; he would bowl better if he could moderate his p a ce ; proved a good captain. R . y . Napier, somewhat an erratic cricketer; not altogether unknown as a bowler. E . Thirkell, must learn not to play forward at short pitched balls; his average must be larger to make up for the runs he loses by his fielding. y.R. Vail, a brave bat, dangerous to the skylar with a distracting uncertainty o f pitch ; a good long field. • • C. IV. a most useful bat, with a good defence, rarely misses a leg ball, hitting hard and low, perhaps a little too fond o f the stroke ; his wicket-keeping is much improved, and at times quite first-rate.
