Paine ............... 199 9 98 8 O * 12.2 *C. K . Watson, always plays up ; his style in batting is too crouching, but he, hits well, and came off towards the end o f the season; a very good cap tain. *A . N . Streatfeild, as a bat, patient and successful; as a bowler, fast, sometimes deadly, sometimes erratic ; as a field, sure ; good all round, and the winner of the prize. *C. S. Hand, enjoys the game ; a good field. E . A . Ward, a free hitter, wanting in defence; a capital field at long leg and cover point. W. H . P. Hayman, a brilliant long leg and cover po in t; his batting, suffered much from unavoidable want o f practice in past seasons ; captain for 1878. *W . E. Cunliffe, very much improved as a bowler, with a puzzling delivery; a good field, being a safe catch ; we never saw a style like liis in batting. H . F . Norris, a useful man in all points ; most useful as a change- bowler. *F. H . P . Palmer, showed good form, disappointing at times, though often usefu l ; he ought always to have fielded as he sometimes did. S . W. S. Carey, began to bat fairly, and a hopeful wicket-keeper. • f . J . shows much promise all round ; he cuts finely. *A . F . Paine, a useful change bowler ; his batting ought not to be mentioned.
