Patterson (Trinity, captain), a fine all round cricketer, generally to be relied on for runs; a good field, ana a very effective slow round-arm bowler with a high delivery, though he was not so successful for the University as in the previous year either with bat or ball; wanted, perhaps, a little more decision as captain. Hon. E . Lyttelton (Trinity), a dangerous batsman when set, and a brilliant outfield, rarely came off with the bat, unfortunately, for his side. P . Lucas (Clare), one of the very best amateur batsmen of the day, having marvellous defence, and playing thoroughly correct cricket; more at home, perhaps, with fast bou a fine and sure field, and, at times, also a useful slow round-arm bowler. T. Luddington (Jesus), a fast, but very erratic, bowler, at times very danger ous with a wicket to help him; a hitting b a t ; good field. D . Q. Steel (Trinity), hardly came up to the promise of 1876, as his play throughout showed a greater propensity for hitting; made one well-hit score of 158 against Surrey at the Oval; a little slow in the field. Hon. A . Lyttelton (Trinity), perhaps the most dangerous batsman in the eleven, playing free cricket in the best form, and a fast run-getter against bowling at all loose ; the best amateur wicket-keeper taking very well on the leg side. L . Jarvis (Trinity), a very useful man ; as a bat has plenty of hit, and usually gets runs; a brilliant field, especially at long le g ; not very successful as a, lob bowler. . H.
