O f f ic e r s for 1877.— Patron, The Earl of Sheffield. President, Mr. H.M. Curteis. Vice-President, Mr. Henry Brand. Treasurer, Mr. W . G. Ashby. Committee —East Sussex: Mr. T. R . Burt, Mr. H. Campion, Mr. H. Curteis, Mr. S. Beard, Mr. R . Loder, Lord Arthur H i l l ; West Sussex: Viscount Tumour, Rev. H. Nicholls, Lieut-Col. Ingram, Major Wisden, Mr. A . J. W . Biddulph, Mr. Wm. Napner; Brighton: Mr. H. Dering, Col. Baines, Rev. J. Pycroft, Mr. H. Cooke, Rev. Geo. Cotterill, Mr. K . R . Murchison. Hon. Secs., Mr. G. W . King, 41, Brunswick Place, Brighton; Mr. C. H. Smith, 34, Ship Street, Brighton, and Monstow’s Manor, Henfielcl. Sussex was the most illfated of all the counties in 1877. Eight matches produced seven decisive defeats, and one game drawn in its favour. Slack ness everywhere was the prevalent feature of Sussex cricket during the year, and an energetic revival is much needed. The loss of Mr. Arthur Smith’s bowling was a great blow to the eleven, and Mr. J. M. Cotterill was also badly missed. The last match of the year proved the possession of a new amateur batsman, of undoubted promise, in Mr. R . T . Ellis, and next season we hope to see Sussex again to the front. New blood is much wanted, and should be heartily encouraged.
