Surrey played twelve county matches i n l 87 G, and of these two were won, one drawn, eight lost, and one ended in a tie. Not a very promising sum- nmrv, nor one to cheer those who take an interest in a countv once aide to I*ia\' all comers. At the outset the eleven suffered averv hoavv blowrbv the retirement of their captain, Mr. G. Straehan, and throughout the season they played under the disadvantage of wanting an energetic and competent leader. Surrey groans under tlie weight of amateurs who are lukewarm, and seems to be smitten with a plague of self-styled well-wishers, who re\ile and scoff under the name of studying the public good. Yet there are signs that Surrey cricket is on the move. Jones and Bariatt both bowled \ \»*1 and bid fair to become worthy successors to Street and Soutlicrton. hi Mr. Bead. Surrey has undoubtedly one of the very best amateur cricketers of the day, and Mr. Carmichael, who played a very promising innings against Gloucestershire at Clifton, will train on and be of use to the county. Messrs. Lucas and Game did not play so often as they could or might have done, and generally the eleven that played for Surrey was not fully repre sentative. A little more energy on the part of the amateurs of Surrey would help to revive the faded glories of the county and silence the detrac tors. Results of Matches.
