Middlesex is to be congratulated on the fact that its eleven at least showed more of their genuine form than in the previous year. Although only one of the six matches was won absolutely, the cricket shown throughout the reason was of a very high order. In batting the eleven received a new ally of undoubted ability in Mr. t \ J. Ottaway, whose reappearance was one of the events of 1S7G, and his overage one of the chief items worthy of notice in the record of first-class matches. In bowling there was still a want of change, although it must be stated that Mr. Francis, the best fast bowler in the South, was only able to play in a few matches, and his absence was severely folt by the county. The fielding of the eleven was not by any means up to the mark, and in this respect Middlesex cricket of the present time contrasts most unfavourably wnli the recollections of a few years ago. Taken all round, though. Middlesex would have taken its own paid with any county eleven during 1870, and the results of the lute matches were emi nent)} satisfactory to tlio.^e who take interest in metropolitan cricket.
