(6) Lancashire r. Sussex. Brighton, August 17, 18, and 19. Sussex mustered all its available strength, while Lancashire was most inefficiently represented, and had not even one of its eleven able to act a.- wicket-keeper. Fortunately for Lancashire, Mr. Hornby was in brilliant form, and out of 124 runs from the bat he contributed G7, or more than one. half of the runs. Sussex was almost as much dependent on one of its eleven, as out of a total of 142 Charlwood subscribed 53 by good free hitting, and of the balance 21 came from the bat of Lillywhite. Disasters befell Lancashire at the commencement of its second venture, as Mr. Hornby was caught at cover-point the first ball be received, and Mr. W. C t . Mills (26) and Ricketts (25) were the chief contributors to the total of 97. At the end of the second day Sussex bad scored 16 out of 97 runs wanted to win, and Brighton was jubilant over what was regarded as a sure victory. The end, though, was disappointing, and it was a matter for surprise that on such good wickets as are provided at Brighton four innings should have been completed for an aggregate of 364 runs On the third day Sussex had 81 runs to get for ten wickets ; but they failed at 69, and Lancashire gained an unexpected victory by 12 runs, solely due to Watson’s excellent bowling at the crisis. Mr. C. A. Brown was not-out each time for Sussex, with 8 and 14 runs. Lancashire. 141 and 97 ; total, 238.
