72 xnitidcns, 20 runs. LANCASHIRE. O fficers for 1870.— President , The Earl of Sefton. Vice Presidents, Earl of Derby, Earl of Ellesmere, Lord Skelmersdale, C. Turner, Esq., M.P., Right Hon. R. A. Cross, M.P. Committee , Messrs. A. Appleby, T. T. Bellhouse, F. H. Birley, F. Hardcastle, A. N. Hornby, J. F. Lease, J. Makinson, F. Nicholson, W. Potter, A. B. Rowley, E. B. Bowlev, R. Walker, T. Walker. Hon. Sec., Mr. S. H. Swire. Treasurer, Mr. E. Cballender. Assistant Secretary and Collector , F. Reynolds, Manchester Cricket Ground, Stretford. Lancashire played ten matches in 1870, and of these five were won and five lost. A well-won victory over Notts in the first encounter of the season was followed by a hollow defeat of Derbyshire and an almost equally cora- plele triumph over Kent. Of the first five matches played four were won* but after this the eleven fell to pieces irretrievably, and with the exception of ( ne bare success over Sussex, at Brighton, the remaining engagements; all ended in failures. Mr. Hornby played brilliant cricket throughout, and Barlow's steady batting was ns useful as ever. William Me Intyre and Watson took 140 out of 174 wickets, and of the 34 left 20 fell to Mr. Appleby. With its best eleven Lancashire could cope with any shire, but except at home the best eleven is not forthcoming, and, as Gravesend and Brighton proved, the out cricket of the county is not a success. With Me srs. Hornby, Steel, Patterson, Chadwick, Hillkirk, Schofield, Appleby, and Royle, and William McIntyre, Watson, and Barlow, Lancashire can boftht of a team almost equal to that of any other county of the day.
