71 (0) Kent r. Surrey. Oval, August 24, 25, and 26. A match productive of one of the most extraordinary bowling feats of the year. Kent were jubilant at winning the toss, but they had little to rej >ice at when the innings was over, as the whole eleven were out for 66, and of th»*se 43 out of 58 from the bat came from Mr. Penn (22) and Lord Harris (21). Jones, the young bowler of Surrey, did the mischief, and his figures in thi> innings will hear comparison with any of the season : 13 overs, 8 maidens, 10 runs, 0 wickets. It was a great performance when it is considered that the six batsmen were Lord Harris, Messrs. F. Penn. Mackinnon, Shaw, and He line, and Henty, and that all were clean bowled. The Surrey batting was noticeable for two reasons. One was a very tine innings of 71 by Hi chard Humphrey, quite in his old form, and the other was a rather uncommon feat, Jupp going in first and taking out his bat. l i e ivas in jive itours mul tu'entif minutes for his 73. In their second venture the Kentish eleven were more at home, and Messrs. Shaw (58), Foord-Kelcey (49), and Yardloy (45) all played good cricket. Surrey had 57 runs to win, and Jupp and Humphrey got them after the old fashion, so that Kent were defeated by ten wickets. Surrey, 268 and 57 (no wickets) ; total, 32o.
