The revival of Hampshire cricket and the promise shown by the eleven •luring 1870 will have been pleasant to all who take interest in county cricket. That much of its success was due to one member of its eleven, and that one an amateur, only requires a glance at the averages to show. Indeed, but for Mr. Ridley the county would have had a poor chance. In batting there were undoubted signs of young players of great utility, and even without noticing the excellent batting of Mr. ;Booth, the captain of the eleven, some fine ♦ricket was shown by Messrs. Carter and Duncan, and also by Hyslop. At present there is a need of the backbone of professionals essential to the permanent institution of any county, as amateurs are, owing to obvious reasons unreliable. At least Hampshire showed a decided advance on its form of the preceding season, and in the care of Mr. Booth it is i elt> to show any decadence without a strenuous effort. Results of Matches.
