Middlesex. July 10, 11, and 12. A match brought to a premature close by one of the most mournful occurrences that haye ever been witnessed in any line of sport. Again there was a bad wicket, but still the scoring was high on both sides. Nine of the Nottingham eleven reached double figures, Daft foremost with a fine score of 82, and Barnes second wtk 45 not out. The total was 339 ; and on tko Middlesex side only two batsmen made any stand, Mr. I. D. Walker playing a very fine innings, including some fine drives from Morley, of 98, and Mr. Hadow one of 46 without a mistake. ^Middlesex followed on with 166 runs to the bad, and again but for one batsman their chances would have been very dismal. Mr. Ottaway went in first, and was out the last wicket, his 106 out of 192 from the bat a perfect innings in every sense, without a semblance of a chance. Notts had 55 to win, and from the fourth ball delivered Selby was caught. Arthur Shrewsbury followed, but, when 10 runs had been scored, a painful event suspended operations. Tom Box, the ground keeper at Prince’s, and well-known as the best professional wicket keeper of a past day, was at his usual post superintending the telegraph board by the scoring box. He had put up the figures 10 as scored by Notts, and had sat down in his chair, hut a few minutes afterwards he was observed to fall back suddenly, and when carried to the adjoining refre. )>- merit bar, was found to be dead. The play was accordingly stopped, and
