The wicket played very queerly from the first, and hence the scoring was comparatively low on both sides. Lockwood's 70 was a very uppish and by no means one of his best innings. The Gentlemen were not at home with the bat, as Shaw was unplayable, and Ulyett, though he did not get a wicket, bumped in a very dangerous manner. Mr. Lucas was in two hours and thirty-five minutes for 35, as fine a display of batting under discouraging circumstances as one could wish to see. The second innings of the Players was only noticeable for the patient batting of Barlow, who went in first v icket down, and carried out his bat for 45, after an innings of three hours and a half. It is not difficult to estimate his rate of scoring. Thirteen runs per hour ! The Gentlemen had 149 runs to win, and, considering that the wicket wTas of the most difficult kind, to wan, as they did by 5 wickets, was a very excellent performance. In the first innings of the Players Ulyett was bowled by the fifth ball of an over. The bowding of Alfred Shaw on the first day wras wonderful. 48 overs ; 40 maidens ; 12 runs ; 3 wickets.
