(Winchester and Oxford), A very fine all-round cricketer, being good at every p o in t ; bats in neat style and is an excellent field, M arriott , G. S, A fas,t round-arm bowler, and fair bat. M itchell , R. A. H. (Eton and Oxford). Still ranks as one of the best b a t s men of the d a y ; is now a Afaster at E ton College. MIDDLESEX. B ird , G. An uncertain batsman in first-class matches, and un lucky for his County, though he played fine cricket in other engagem ents, A dangerous bat when set, and a good f ie ld ; very fair wicket-keeper. B rune , C. J. (Cambridge). A very straight medium-pace bowler, likely to be dangerous at any t im e ; did. not play for his County in 1870. B uller , C. F. (Harrow). Drives very hard and plays the game thorough ly , not a safe or smart field. Hardly as successful with the willow as in former years. * G reen , C. E . (Uppingham and Cambridge). One of the best amateur b a ts men of the day, having line defence with great certainty of h itting a ll round; a good long-stop ; played litt le in first-class matches in 1870. O ttaway , C. J. (Eton and Oxford). Played for Middlesex by residence. One of the very best amateur batsmen of the day, w ith marvellous defence and unwearied patience; a good field; scored largely in the few matches he played. R utter , E. (Rugby). A slow left-hand round-arm bowler, and has done th e County great service ; is a good field, and better bat than h is scores imply. Did not play for the County much. T urner , M. (Cheltenham). A very good wicket-keeper, and at t im es bats to some account, having rapidly improved the last few years. W alker , I. D. (Harrow). One of tho very best all-round cricketers, being a fine batsman, with a talent for h itting on the off-side, and a truly irreproachable field, especially at mid-off. A good captain, and exce llen t judge of the game. W alker , R. D. (Harrow and Oxford). Has not figured bo much in pro m inent matches of l a t e ; a very clever slow round-arm bowler, and a run-getting bat in his own style. W alker , V. E. (Harrow). The best judge of the game e x t a n t ; as a captain has no equal, and is still a brilliant field in any position , and a lm ost effective batsman; only played once for h is County in 3870. H erbert , A. W. Pretty bat, but has not played much against first-class bowling; very good field. R owley , Capi.
