Showed himself to be as brilliant a batsman as ever, and was invaluable to Kent at the end of the season. P. r; ison . W. B. (Tonbridge). A promising cricketer, being a good bat and safe field. LANCASHIRE. .A ppleby , A. A left fast round-arm bowler, very straight, and should not be left out of any amateur eleven; an improved bat and very safe ca fch ; a valuable man for any team. BinLLY, F. H. (Winchester). A vory neat bat, and good slow underhand bowler. Does not piny much now. B ousf ^ i lij , E. J. Hays little now ; but is still a heavy hitter, and a good field. D ewhurst , R. Hns a free style of batting, but has not been so successful a« was anticipated; good field and can throw well. H illkire , J. A dangerous batsman, seldom stays at the wicket without scoring ; excels chiofiy in bitting, especially on the oft' s id e ; good change bowler. H ornby , A. N. (Harrow). A batsman with very few superiors; plays ib e best cricket, with fine defence and great power of h it t in g ; is a splendid field and sure catch, and can bowl with either a m . Has bc*en for several years tire highest average scorer for his County; played iu most of the County matches in 1876. Played for Gentlemen. T ackpon , E. A s a wicket-keeper has few superiors, taking all kinds of howling with perfect ease. We were glad to see h im rep resen ting his County more often diuing the past season. L iiese , J. F. A very fast run getter and most powerful batsman, his driving being very fine; good field at point. Did not play for his County much last season. Rather nervous on first going in. M kjnson , J. Still maintains his reputation as being one of the best cricketers in the North of England. Seldom plays for his County; but generally to he found playing for the Broughton Club, of which ho is an old and useful member. P are , H. B. (Cheltenham). A very good steady bat, frequently makes long scores against good bowling; a good and safe field, though not so successful last season. R owley , E. B. One of the best batsmen in the North, drives well, and a severe punisher of slow bowling ; good long-stop and field. P orter , E. H, A good and safe bat, with capital defence ; a fair change bowler ; also good field. Very valuable to his County. C halwick . E. L. (Castleton Club). A very good bat, cuts very neatly, and good Ug hitter; also good fmid, A useful addition to his County. L each , J .R .and W. (Castleton Club). A trio good enough for almost anv eleven, all thoroughly good batsmen, and good fields; but unfortunately do not play much for their County. B ctteewobth , W. A very rising player, and will no doubt be of some service to his County. W r ig h t . Rev. b. W. (Postal! and Oxford).
