Meek (captain), as a bat bits hard, but has little defence and less patience; much too fond of a h i t ; bowls fast, and usually fields mid-off. #Gf. G. S. Grundy, good bat if well set very dangerous, hitting especially clean and hard on off-side, but too fond of a slog; fields well at point; as a medium-pace bowler was not so goed as in the previous year. *£. 0 . Clough-Taylor, steady bat, with excel lent defence ; played one or two remarkably good innings in the course of the year; good field at cover-slip; bowls slows at times wdth success. *A. F. Stewart , as good a bowler as in the previous year, with the same delivery, though again unlucky at Lord’s ; in batting, however, has been far from improving, and leaves much to be desired in the field. *S. F. Charles, keeps wicket very fairly, is a good bat if he plays steady, but is too fond of a hit. *L. K . Jarvis, fine bat, combining defence with great hitting power, and should train into a first-class batsman ; beautiful field at long-leg and cover-point, and has done immense service with lobs. *Hon. C. Hardinge, goes in first, good defence, and has played some ex cellent innings during the year; very lazy in the field. *A. J. Whitaker, also goes in first; capital defence, and hits w'ell to leg ; splendid long- stop, and to be depended on anywhero in the field. *H. jp. Blaine, good bat with strong defence ; makes runs fast when s e t ; has played well all through the year, notably at Lord’s ; good field, and can be depended on to do his best anywhere. A. B. Giles, good defensive bat, making runs by good cutting and leg-hitting ; bowls very fair medium with neat delivery ; capital field anywhere ; played well at Lord’s. C. J . E. Jarvis, fair bat', cutting especially nea tly ; fair field, and can bowl on occasion; ought to do good service in all departments of tho game next year.
