year much may bo expected from him. A nice forward wrist player, but has not yet learnt the art of getting the weight of the body into tho stroke. Does not always play quite straight. A beautiful long-stop with quick return. J. E, K. St add, a very brilliant bat, with capital play oh tho legs. Plays also well forward, though not quite near enough to the ground. Never succeeds in making anything of a ball near to tho off-stump, and is apt to get out by playing round easy balls. Very good field and thrower. I[. ( . Cioodhart , a good bat with great facility on tho leg-side. Dees not reach out or play strongly enough when playing forward. A splendid catch and safe field. *L. Bury , a fine strong hitter, playing immensely hard at tho ball. Holds his bat too tight with his left hand, thus making his stylo ruder than it w'ould otherwise be. Useful and dangerous bowler with high action. G. H. Portal , a very clever and effective left-hand bowler ; but rather un certain. Few better batsmen have gone in tenth on a public-school side. Has a very dashing and brilliant style with tolerable defence. Good field. *0 . W. Foley, a very wicket-keeper to fast bowling, improving much at tho end of the season. Played some very respectable innings. C. M. Smith, a very straight, steady, and effective slow bowler. Has yet much to learn as a bat, but hits well at a pinch. P. G. Gervais has rather a negative style of play, especially to slows, but played two good innings before Lord’s. Slow in tho field. * Signifies has left. HAXLEYBURY COLLEGE. Captain, W. S. Gurney.
