92 (3) South v. North. Rochdale, September 7, 8 , i). F or the B en e f it of the C r icketers * F und . By some, so late a fixture for a benefit match was deemed impolitic, and, as events proved, tlie event was not a pecuniary success. On the other liand, the cricket was brilliant throughout, and in the three days 690 rune wore scored for the loss of only twonty-threo wickets, or an average of just over 30 runs for each batsman. The South had not even its usual itinerant strength, nor indeed the North, as Daft, Shrewsbury, and Shaw were absent from the latter, and from the South, Jupp and Southerton were both absen tees. The Grace family did more than their fair share for the South, as G. T. Grace contributed 81 and 03, W. G. Grace 41 and 39, and W. R. Gilbert 15 and 35,—or in all 301 out of 136 runs from the bat. The match was drawn. South, 221 and 238 (three wickets) ; total, 459. North, 237. The receipts amouuted to £168 19s. 5d, and the expenditure to £210 10s. 8 d , so that the result was a loss of £41 11s. 3d. to the fund, a result to 1 ye regretted, considering the object of the match.
