7 9 . (3) Hants V . Sussex (return). Brighton, July 22 and 23. Sussex apparently overrated its antagonist, as Messrs. CoiJerill and YVin- slow as well as James Phillips were all absent. On the olh r La •1, Hants this time invoked tlie aid of Messrs. Longman and Ridley, anti the latter did the greatest part in producing the one victory of the season. Greenfield was chief scorer for Sussex, with 58 and 1(>, and Walter Humphreys second with 4 and 27. Mr. Longman, for Hants, was not in lorin, though he did get double hgures (17 and 13) in each innings. On the other hand Mr. Ridley was a terror to Sussex both with bat and ball. With the former he made 54 and 12, and his bowling figures will speak for themselves. He made a brilliant finish by clean bowling the last three wickets in the second Innings of Sussex in one over :— Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets. 57 20 74 12 Hants won by 30 runs. Hants, 107 and 113; total, 220. Sussex, 07 and 93; total 190. (4) Hants V . Kent (return). Winchester, August 19 and 20. Hants was weak and Kent proportionately strong. The first innings of Hants was a pitiable affair, four wickets falling for 29 runs and nine for 34 By way of contrast Hearne alone of the Kentish eleven failed tor each double figures. Lord Harris (75) and Mr. Frank Penn (47) during their stay put on 111 runs, and Messrs. Mackinnon ((5(5) and V. K. Shaw (51) helped to swell the score to the respectable total of 333. Hants had 299 runs to save the innings, and towards this they could only subscribe 82, Mr. Crowdy (18), and Galpiu (13), being the chief agents. Kent won by an innings and 217 runs.
