Catford Bridge, June 17 and 18. The attacking powers of Hampshire were far from strong in 1875, and indeed it was only against Hants that Kent met with any success. Kent profited by the weakness of Hampshire bowling, to make a respectable score of 227, Lord Harris, as usual, the prime mover with a masterly inn ings of 92. This, too, was absolutely 28 runs in excess of the aggregate of Hants in the first innings, the highest contribution being 13 by Mr. Booth. Nor (lid the second seem likely to produce a much larger total, as eight v, icivets were down for 54 runs. Paris with a free but lucky not-out innings of 51, and Galpin (with 27), the two last batsmen, however, put on nearly 70 runs and nearly saved the innings, though Kent eventually won by an innings and three runs. Kent, 227 ; Hants, 64 and 160, total 224. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets. George (1st Inns, of Hants) . . . . 23 10 32 6 (2) Hants v. Sussex. Winchester, July 1 and 2. Hunts depended on Messrs. Ridley and Longman, the University captains, for most of its strength, and they were only available for one match at Brighton. On this occasion Sussex had everything its own way, as was only to be expected. Sussex scored 206, and the chief contributor was FilJery wi th 71, 11 runs more than the whole first innings of Hants. Mr. W inslow scored 44, and Killick 32, but otherwise the display was not bril liant, seven of the eleven together realising only 24 runs from the bat against very indifferent bowling. Hants failed to show cricket of a high order at any point, and details are unnecessary. Sussex won by an innings and 27 runs. Sussex, 206, Hants, 60 and 119; total, 179.
