James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1876

74 Grace was still there, and only six wickets had lallen. Then came the turn, as in three overs Pooley had caught three batsmen, Messrs. \Y. G. Grace, Crooke, and Bush, and finally Surrey won a grand match by 26 runs. That the result was due essentially to Pooley\s brilliant wicket keeping no one can deny. lie had five wickets in the second innings of Gloucestershire, and his keeping at the crisis was one of the exploits of the season. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets. Southerton (Surrey) 67 27 98 13 Surrey scored 161 and 106 ; total, 267. Gloucestershire, 99 and 142 ; total, (2) Gloucestershire V. Sussex. Brighton, June 10, 11, and 12. Gloucestershire was not strong, as Messrs Miles and Townsend, who both performed at the Oval, were absent. Weak bowling and very discreditable fielding, too, lost them the match fts it deserved to be lost. {Sussex won the toss and scored heavily, seven batsniGii making double figures. The feature of the innings was a fine score of 124 by a colt, Mr. L. Winslow, an admirable display at every point. In all, the innings came to 281, and Gloucestershire against this could only register 144, Mr. W. G. Grace of these contributing 36 and Mr. Monkland 33. There was a heavy dead weight of 137 against Gloucestershire, but Mr. W. G. Grace did his best to avert defeat. At one time, on the third day, it seemed as if .the elements would interfere to save the westerners, but they forbore to do this injustice to Sussex. Mr. W. G. Grace’s second score of 77 was a grand show of batting, with more care than he usually exhibits. Ultimately Sussex had 65 runs to get to win, and won by seven wickets. Sussex, 281 and 65 (three wickets); total, 346. Gloucester* 345. shire, 144 and 201; total, (3) Gloucestershire v. Notts. Nottingham, July 29, 30, and 31. Gloucestershire was well represented but for the absence of Mr. E. M. Grace. None the less, both innings were comparatively small, as “ the Champion ” only made 27 and 7, and the two chief scorers were Mr. Town send with 19 and 47, and Mr. It. E. Bush, the Captain of the Clifton College Eleven, with nothing and 32. Mr. W. G. Grace's bowling alone prevented a long score to Notts, and the result was a total of 177, towards which Daft (47), Selby (37), and Oscroft (30) contributed 114. Notts had 65 rims to win, but they only just Landed by a majority of three wickets. Notts, 177 and 66 (7 wickets); total, 243. Gloucestershire, 110 and 131 • total, 241- A.
