Kent was indeed the only County vanquished by Derbyshire in 1875, and this was the second decisive defeat. Kent was far from well represented and its weakness with the bat on this occasion would have justified a reverse at the hands of any County. The ground was so bad from heavy rains that it was arranged to pitch a fresh wicket at the commencement of each innings. Kent won the toss and chose to take the held, hut the move availed them little as it proved. The bowling was weak and chances were missed on all sides. Hence, Derbyshire wras able to realise a tine score of 213 ; tine, considering the condition of the ground. To this aggregate Hickton contributed 14, Mr. J. Smith 35, and Foster 34. My croft's howling too utterly upset the Kentish batsmen. Derby, August 9, 10 and 11. 9 Notts was strong and Derbyshire well represented, though Hickton was absent. Notts scored 179 and 140, but in the first innings 93 were due to Wild, and in the second 40, so that omitting his wonderful exploit, Notts did little with the bat. Derbyshire, with Mr. R. P. Smith as chief scorer of 31, reached 149 in its hrst venture, but Alfred Shaw was irresistible in the second, and the total was only 66,47 of these being due to Frost (24) and Foster (23). The bowling throughout the match was very much above the average, and Shaw brought his efforts to a brilliant termination by howling three of the Derbyshire Eleven (Hay, Mycroft. and Bradley), with three consecutive balls. It was a bowlers’ match throughout and Shawls and Mycroft's figures Runs. Wickets. 62 12 (5 bowled) 119 12 (9 bowled) total, 321. Derbyshire, 138 win prouuco a comparison : Shaw ...
